Jul 8, 2010 Hamilton
The Hamilton watch Company was an American manufaturer of wristwatches and pocket watches. Today it is part of the Swatch Group.
The company was formed in Lancaster, Pennsylvalnia in 1892 when a group of
businessmen purchased a bankrupt watch company and merged it with another watchmaking company. The new company was named after a wealthy local landowner, James Hamilton and the Hamilton Watch Company was born.
At the end of the 19th Century, hamilton was making accurate Railroad-grade pocket watches. During World War II, Hamilton supplied the US Navy and exported more than a million watches to them and other allied forces.
In 1957 Hamilton made the world’s first electric watch, the Hamilton Electric 500.
In the 1960′s Hamilton Watches acquired a Swiss Watch company Büren and began partly using Swiss movements in their American watches. In 1969 they ceased America manufacturing operations.
In 1971, the Omega & Tissot holding company Société Suisse pour l’Industrie Horlogère (SSIH) purchased Hamilton, and eventually became part of the Swatch group.
Still very popular, and are reasonably priced. Hamilton watches are popular with many film stars such Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin, Russell Crowe and Richard Gere just to name the recent.
